At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
